Mt. Airy, GA is the hometown of Andy Griffith. We decided to stay there a couple of nights so we could enjoy this place that reminds me of East Kingston (my hometown) and the surrounding small towns where I grew up.
Below is Andy's modest childhood home - which is now available to rent by the night to real fans.
Many of the scenes from the show and the references were based on places in Mt. Airy.
Here is the actual Sherrif's office on which the Mayberry show was based.
They even had a cell that looked like the one that Otis occupied after his week-end bender!
We actually started the tour of the town by taking a SQUAD car tour! (Siren and all.)
The tour started at Wally's Service station. Goober says, "Hey!" Some scenes from the gas station below!
We learned that this town is known for somethings else!
It is hard to get perspective on how LARGE this is ... "The largest open face granite quarry in the WORLD!"
The town has MANY lovely buildings that are made of this granite. AND, it has been used in many seats of government, including our nations' capitol!
